Step 1 Mentor Teacher Expectations

Welcome to UTeach and our introductory course Step 1. Early field experiences provide our students the opportunity to explore the profession of teaching in a hands-on way and decide if teaching is right for them. We couldn’t do it without you. This document outlines the duties and expectations for Mentor Teachers. Please review it and us if you have any questions.

Mentor Teachers attend a planning session early in the semester to meet UTeach teachers as well as plan and schedule the field experiences.

Mentor Teachers supervise UTeach students during classroom visits lasting approximately 45-60 minutes. These visits consist of both observation and instruction. 

Mentor Teachers document classroom visits by signing time stamped student observation or lesson feedback forms.

Mentor Teachers recieve a stipend for each team of Step 1 students that they supervise.

In Step 1, Mentor Teachers select grade appropriate lesson topics for their students.

During classroom visits, Mentor Teachers:

  • are present in the classroom at all times and do not leave UTeach teachers alone with a substitute or student teacher.
  • assume primary responsibility for classroom management.
  • promptly complete three short lesson feedback forms. A copy of the form goes the UTeach teacher, either in hard copy or electronically.

NOTE: These forms are important as students read and reflect on them before the next teach. They also provide evidence that students have taught each lesson, a requirement for passing the course.

Further, Mentor Teachers:

  • provide UTeach teachers with the opportunity to observe and teach the same group of students for all field experiences. The UTeach program understands this may not be possible in all circumstances and we appreciate the effort to provide our students with continuity in the field experience.
  • use email on a regular basis to communicate promptly and effectively with the UTeach students.
  • communicate with the Step 1 instructors at the first indication of problems.

If it becomes necessary to reschedule a classroom visit, Mentor Teachers will:

  • contact UTeach teachers at least 48 hours in advance of the visit to be cancelled, or as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency.
  • contact the Step 1 instructor if the UTeach teachers cannot be contacted directly.
  • reschedule the missed classroom visit as soon as possible, ideally the same day and time the following week.

*The Step 1 field experience will be 100% remote for Fall 2020. UT students may participate synchronously or asynchrously in elementary classes but will not attend in person.

Step 1 students must complete five total hours of field work by the end of the semester (this can be a combination of planning, observing, and teaching). The course will be broken into five blocks with a target to have your teams complete at least one hour of field time in each block. Below is a sample of possible REMOTE activities. You will plan your specific schedule with your teaching teams at the initial Mentor Teacher Meeting on Saturday 9/12 from 9:00-11:00 AM. Teacher provide written feedback to their teams at the end of block 2, block 4, and the end of the semester.

*Teaching teams come at the same time and day for each of the teaching and observation weeks. For example, if a team is scheduled for a time slot on Tuesday from 8-9 am, then they will come to observe/teach at that time for each of the weeks above.
