How Does Certification Work?

To be certified to teach in Texas public schools, educators must:

  • earn an undergraduate degree in any subject
  • complete an approved Educator Preparation Program
  • pass the 2 TExES exams

There's also fingerprinting, a background check, etc.

UTeach Natural Sciences is an approved Educator Preparation Program and the only pathway at UT Austin for STEM certification (science, technology, engineering, and math).

For current, UT Austin undergraduates, there is no application to start the program. Register for UTS101 (offered fall and spring) and you're in! If you decide to continue with the program, you can keep your current major or declare the Teaching Option

Degree-holders must apply to the program and to the University of Texas at Austin for admission.
